Curtins Consulting Sponsor John Moores University Student's Volunteer Trip to Kenya
Curtins Consulting sponsored Steve Dowell, an engineering intern at the company, to complete a month of volunteer work in Kimilili, Kenya.
Steve worked on a water control project to aid the drainage of rain water from the roads around the village. The roads, made of clay, become unusable after heavy rain, which is frequent in the area during the rainy season. This causes much disruption in an area already suffering from poor infrastructure.
Steve formed part of a team investigating the use of plants to absorb the surface water, re-profiling the ground in an attempt to control the rainwater. The team also educated the local community about how to collect and store rainwater from roofs during the rainy season to enable them to receive a supply during the dry season, and also how to sanitise the water to make it safe for drinking.
