Two projects for which Curtins have provided engineering services for have been shortlisted for the Building magazine Awards 2012. BFI Master Film Store is in the running for Building Magazine project of the year and The Triangle, Swindon is up for Housing Project of the year.
Property developer Realty Estates has recently been granted planning permission for its £35m retail and leisure scheme at the approach to Manchester Piccadilly Station. This is one of the most exciting retail and leisure developments happening in Manchester. Curtins advised on all matters relating to transport and highways.
Curtins was recently appointed by Volkswind UK Ltd to provide transport services in relation to proposals to transport wind turbine abnormal loads to a rural site near Watford, Northamptonshire. A planning application for the 5-turbine scheme had previously been submitted and refused, in part, on Highway grounds before Curtins involvement. Once appointed a new route to transport abnormal loads to the site was identified by Curtins and a due diligence exercise was undertaken. This work led to the Highways reason for planning refusal to be removed. Curtins also provided Highways evidence at a recent Public Inquiry following which the appeal was allowed and planning permission granted.
The story of Kevin McCloud’s sustainable housing development in Swindon, The Triangle, is being aired in a 2 part series on Channel 4 this December 8th and December 13th , titled Kevin’s Grand Design. As the structural engineers on the project, Curtins have played a major part in the provision of sustainable solutions on the project and have introduced some cutting edge innovations too. Curtins Consutling are celebrating the success of three of their projects at the RIBA East Awards 2011.
This £800,000 project at The Crofton School comprises a new single storey Resource Provision centre serving pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and associated staff. The new building is a single storey block approximately rectangular on plan and measuring approximately 20m x 18m. The centre includes teaching areas, a group room, sensory learning areas and associated administration areas.The corridor leading to the Centre and sensory rooms consists of a lightweight steel canopy structure.The new build is a masonry structure with proprietary timber beams in the Teaching Area and traditional timber joists in other areas supporting sedum green roof. Though single storey, significant challenges in the form of providing large open plan areas without structural columns or walls and corner windows without corner columns were resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. Sedum green roof and foundations on vibrated stone column improved ground were provided as sustainable options.The building has been completed to a high standard, to the front of the existing school and will facilitate the school in the years to come.
The £22.5 million Wolverhampton Interchange project for Neptune Developments involved the construction of a new 50m double span glazed bridge over Wolverhampton’s ring road to provide pedestrians with a safe link between the train station and the new futuristic bus station which has glazed pedestrian walkways with a lightweight PTFE roof supported off ‘bowstring trusses’.
Curtins Consulting has been appointed by Land & Lakes to provide all transport and highways input for Penrhos Leisure Village, a 370 acre leisure and residential development in Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey. The site will be split into three areas to be known as Kingsland, Penrhos and Cae Glas under the development proposals which will come forward in two planning applications. One application will ask for consent to build a 62 acre residential development at Kingsland and the other will be for a 308 acre leisure village at Penrhos and Cae Glas to include lodges, apartments, restaurants, small retail units, bars, cafes and various sports and leisure facilities.
Curtins Consulting are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a prestigious ACE Engineering Excellence Award for our work on ‘The People’s History Museum’ in Manchester which won the accolade in the category of “Building Structures – medium sized firm”. The Liverpool University Heating Infrastructure Project by Curtins was also recognised and received a Commendation. The awards showcase the finest achievements of consultancy and engineering and the innovation that makes the industry crucial to local, national and global economies.
The University of Liverpool’s Heating Infrastructure Project was recognised for its architectural excellence at the regional Royal Institute of British Architects awards held last night (18th May) in Manchester.
