Snow Hill
Snow Hill is set to become one of the largest redevelopment schemes in Birmingham.
Snow Hill Building One is an eleven storey office building with a three storey stepped basement. The building is designed around a central atrium with the sloping elevation adjacent to Snow Hill station creating a dramatic appearance.
The original concept for the structure of the building was to use insitu concrete flat slabs in the basement with a composite steel frame above podium level all on a 9m x 9m grid. However, following pre-letting of the top five floors the client, Ballymore Developments, required accelerated construction and early water tightness of these floors. To achieve this, the steel frame was started at basement level but encased in concrete at the lower levels to maintain the appropriate robust construction. Temporary bracing of the steel frame enabled the upper floors to be constructed ahead of the lower floors, thus achieving the required acceleration. As the lower level floors were constructed the temporary bracing was either removed or incorporated into the permanent works.
