The technical advisers were commissioned by Her Majesty’s Court Service to design a combined Magistrates and Crown Court facility (4,000 sq m approximately) in Caernarfon to serve the Gwynedd Council area.

A four court facility is required consisting of:

• A designated Magistrates court
• Two Crown Courts one large and one standard sized
• One Multipurpose room which could be used either as a Youth Court
• Hearing room or Conference Room. All courts will have fixed docks and be served by a single custody core
• Court related functions including judiciary, jury and witness facilities
• Court Administration facilities
• Welsh Language Unit

The new facility is to be located on the former Sir Hugh Owen School site on Llanberis Road located under a mile due east of the Caernarfon’s main town centre. The objective of the design proposals is to achieve a BREEAM “excellent” rating and has been designed to be DDA compliant in line with the governments ‘Better Public Building’ initiative.
