Curtins, as part of a design team, were appointed by the Isle of Man Government as the lead structural engineer. Curtins also provided the precast concrete design and detailing for this new prison which was completed early 2006.

The main block comprises of 400 cells over 2 storeys and 5 wings. The wing blocks are of precast reinforced concrete and were delivered to site via ‘flat packs' and assembled on site using insitu concrete stitches.

The facility is surrounded by a precast concrete perimeter wall, with 5.2 metres clear height above external ground level. The only interruption to the secure perimeter is the two-storey Gatehouse building, through which access can be gained.

Within the secure perimeter there are numerous buildings consisting of a workshop, 5 wing blocks, a central hub area linking all 5 wing blocks, kitchens, educational and recreational buildings.

Structural steelwork was the preferred material for the majority of buildings, with profiled metal deck flooring.

The external envelope to the buildings consists of fair faced and split faced blockwork in cavity wall construction or tied to the precast cell units.
