This project for the Durham BSF programme involves the major refurbishment of an existing school to provide a state of the art education facility. The works incorporate the demolition of large areas of the existing building together with the construction of new classroom and public areas.

The new build element of the works will incorporate a new 3 storey building to house Byron 6th Form College together with new hall and dining areas, which are shared with the remainder of the school. The new public areas will also house an iconic chapel area to maintain the schools religious identity.

The site topography is such that there is a significant level difference across the site and a variety of retaining structures have therefore been adopted.

The new structure comprises a steel frame with composite metal deck floor slabs. Grid centres have been rationalised to ensure a standardised steelwork arrangement, which in turn maximises efficiency within the design.

A sustainable surface water drainage system has also been adopted to minimise the impact of the proposed development on the surrounding river network.
