In August 2010 De Montfort University gave the go-ahead for the construction of a new leisure centre on a brownfield site on the outskirts of Leicester city centre at the junction of Duns Lane and Western Boulevard.  The Centre sits next to the existing John Sandford Sports Centre currently the home of Leicester Riders Basketball Team.

Curtins were initially appointed to carry out the structural and civil engineering elements of the project and were subsequently awarded the geotechnical and flood risk sections aligned to the scheme.

The building, which is part single storey and part two storey, will house a sports hall capable of providing a new home for the Leicester Riders as well as eight badminton courts and retractable bleacher seating and a competition standard, six lane, 25.0 metre swimming pool.  The two storey section will house the administration and amenities areas along with a cafe at ground floor and a fitness suite with multi-purpose studio at first floor.  To complete the facilities a 15.0m high climbing wall will pass through the cafe and fitness suite and into an integral raised area of the building.
