Carleton Clinic
This £3 million extension to the existing Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Carlisle, is partially steel-framed and partially loadbearing masonry. Although essentially single storey but with a large ‘roof void’ plant area, the floor is suspended pc concrete planks because of site levels.
Curtins role also included the design of all below-ground drainage, as well as structural engineering, drainage work included diversions of existing mains because of conflict with the new-build proposals.
The work was on a live hospital site, immediately abutting the continuing, operational PICU and therefore necessitated very careful planning and coordination between all parties – Medical Staff, Hospital M&E Services Staff, Designers and Contractors.
