The Collegiate
This historic grade II* listed building designed by Harvey Elmes in 1840 was extensively fire damaged in 1993, with the internal timber floors and roof totally destroyed.
Curtins undertook a detailed structural inspection to investigate the integrity of the remaining building and examined the feasibility of saving the façade.
The façade retention scheme involved post-tensioning the ashlar-faced brickwork to allow the oriel windows; massive masonry statues and castellated parapets to be saved.
A new loadbearing masonry structure with insitu concrete floor slabs was constructed behind the façade, together with a new steel framed roof structure incorporating an additional floor.
The building has been transformed from a derelict shell into 80 loft style apartments and penthouse suites.
The original octagonal lecture theatre has been saved and incorporates apartments, utility rooms and a roof garden courtyard.
This project won the annual RIBA Award in 2003.
