Curtins Consulting have been appointed to the design team by Mansfield District Council to provide structural and civil engineering services on the swimming baths that will be renamed in honour of Olympic double gold medallist, Rebecca Adlington.

Curtins design brief was to create a new administration and amenities block on the footprint of part of the existing structure comprising of a new steel frame complete with concrete fibre reinforced first and ground floors on a non concentric grid with limited opportunities for bracings. The design also provided a solution which allowed for extending of the existing c1935 reinforced concrete main pool from four to six lanes and ensuring that all joints between the new concrete and the existing pool are watertight while also allowing for the construction to be carried out without the need to demolish and rebuild the existing building structure.

Curtins were also tasked with providing a scheme for the removal of an existing main concrete support column which as required the introduction of a steel girder spanning between existing building columns and supporting existing reinforced concrete roof and floor beams.
