Theatre Severn
New £20.1million project located in the city centre of Shrewsbury comprising a 650 seat main auditorium with full flying capacity, a 250 seat Studio Theatre (with retractable seating for standing only concerts) and a Dance Studio.
The structure comprises a steel frame superstructure with composite concrete floor slabs and a suspended insitu concrete ground floor slab. The structure is supported off reinforced concrete ground beams spanning between pilecaps with 25m long piles.
The project incorporates the refurbishment of an old chapel which the new theatre is built around and also the protection of Archaeological remains including the 13th Century bridge abutments of St Georges Bridge which are situated under the stage.
The site is also situated within a flood protected area and due to Planning Conditions it was necessary to raise the ground floor of the theatre up one storey for the possible event of the flood defences failing.
The project received a High Commendation Award for Engineering Excellence at the ACE Property Awards 2009, as well as numerous plaudits from both the construction, local and theatre press.
“Theatre Severn is the most ravishing and successful new performance space I have visited’ - Dillie Keane, The Stage Newspaper
‘impressive-looking structure which shows how a large public building can be built on a tricky site’ and that ‘the way that the engineers tackled the flooding and archaeological issues was highly commendable”. - Judges comments on at the ACE Awards
