BFI Acetate & Nitrate Film Store

BFI 2 BFI 3

The project involves the design and construction of a new storage facility to house the British Film Institute's collection of nitrate and acetate film.

Nitrate film is very volatile and needs to be stored at temperatures of 5°C and a relative humidity of 30%.  If a fire were to occur, the nitrate film burns at a temperature of 1,000°C for a very short duration.

The structural scheme comprises of insulated precast concrete walls and slabs to assist in temperature control.

The site is remote with no public foul sewer.  SUDS was adopted for the surface water drainage with a septic tank.
