Runcorn Town Hall

Runcorn 1 Runcorn 2 Runcorn 3 Runcorn 4

This project has completely refurbished the 1960s building; provided a link structure between the historic and modern buildings. It creates an elegant entrance accessible to all visitors via a series of ramps and elevated hard landscaping.

Runcorn Town hall comprises:

  • A grade II listed Victorian structure that contains the council chamber at ground floor level and offices above.
  • A 1960s three storey extension along side the listed building.
  • Magnificent lawn and woodland gardens.
  • The external façade to the extension was poor by modern thermal and acoustic performance standards. This project completely removed all the cladding and replaced it with high performance fenestration. The roof was re covered and photo voltaic cells were installed to reduce energy requirements.
The new entrance structure is a glass clad steel framed structure. It has been built close to the line of tall trees. The foundations for the new structure have been designed to accommodate the likely effects of root growth plus the ground movement due to the removal of a tall fir tree.
  • The steel frame has minimal connection to the historic structure and only in places away from special architectural detail.

The project was under an OGC contract with Globe Construction and was completed on programme.
