Novera Sustainable Energy Facility
Curtins were in involved in a feasability study for a waste to energy plant to be built in Dagenham, East London in 2006. The study was performed in conjunction with Studio E Architects for Novera Energy.
We advised the client on civil and structural requirements for the proposed project including
estimates of foundations, frames, roads, hardstanding and drainage.
The site was previously used by the Ford Motor Company Limited as part of its vehicle holding centre and lies within the London Borough of Havering on the northern bank of the River Thames.
The Sustainable Energy Facility is intended to convert Solid Recovered Fuel (made from waste left after recycling and composting) into a synthetic gas, which would be used to generate electricity. Electricity generated would be supplied to Ford Motor Company Limited or the national grid. The plant, which was expected to require around £25 million in investment to complete, is designed to generate around 10MW of energy from about 90,000 tonnes of fuel made from household waste.
Planning permission was secured in September 2006, however the client subsequently sold the facility to gasification developers Biossence for £1.25 million so that they could focus their efforts toward onshore wind projects.
