Ashleigh Strauther: National Apprenticeship Week 2020

As part of our activities celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2020, our Apprentice Technician Ashleigh Straughter walks us through the average workday and what it’s like working at Curtins.

My typical day starts at 8:30 am when I arrive at the Nottingham office. Once I’ve signed in I switch on my computer, and start the work that I have for the day or continue what I was doing the previous day.

I have been working as a technician at Curtins for over eight months now, and I’ve really appreciated the family feeling of the company. I work with engineers from Civils and Structures on various types of jobs every day. Since I started I have learnt how to use Revit & AutoCAD to produce technical drawings, and my professional communication skills have developed in meetings and presentations both internally & externally.

I regularly communicate with my Line Manager to plan work for the remainder of the week, or longer if necessary.

I am frequently pushed to make improvements in my capabilities by my colleagues and encouraged to step out of my comfort zone. This has been a great help with allowing me to work on more projects and improving my understanding of my role in our team of Technicians and Engineers. Often I find myself asking my peers for help but never denied it, the people at Curtins are kind and patient, always willing to help.

My day usually ends at 5 pm, once I have cleared my desk ready for the next day and turned off my screens and computer.

I hope to continue my journey with Curtins over the next few years as it has progressed already.
