Curtins Care, the Story.
Curtins Care was set up by a small group back in 2010, with the aim to continue our founder Bill Curtin’s legacy by helping the underprivileged and disadvantaged. Bill was from a working-class family, and as a self-proclaimed underdog he championed opportunity through education, employment and social mobility. Corporate social responsibility, in our eyes, is an ongoing commitment to ensure that the concept of giving back is embodied in our DNA by all staff and stakeholders, through our actions, values and Curtins Care mission statement:
“Curtins is committed to enriching the lives of families, individuals and communities through opportunities designed to help people reach their fullest potential.”
Curtins Care is not run by the company but through its dedicated and passionate staff, who through their hard work and dedication have helped increase our fundraising targets year on year. We have pledged and supported over 25 local, national and international charities over the years, delivering charitable activities such as; Cycle rides in Coast Rica for Zoe’s Place, building women’s refuges in Western Kenya, Designing infrastructure in Africa to our annual collection of shoe boxes for Shelter. In the last three years alone, our fundraising has seen a 43% increase, with the total raised in 2017 being £11,299.
With a focus on continuous improvement, the Curtins Care initiative was refreshed for 2018, in consultation with staff. By adopting a more collective approach, we have planned and are running even bigger and better fundraising activities which include, Tough Mudder, Curtins Great British Bake off’s and sponsored Pub Quiz’s, which has also ignited some office competition! We have also appointed a Curtins Care Champion in every one of our 14 offices across the UK, who are responsible for spearheading their fundraising efforts. Curtins has given each of these champions the tools and guidance to assist in achieving their office targets, including the Curtins Care Forum, where support, ideas and corporate information, including best practice can be shared.
This year’s charity, voted for by our staff is The British Heart Foundation (BHF); whose vision is to live in a world in which people do not die prematurely or suffer from heart disease. Sadly, heart related diseases are still one of the biggest killers in adults and children the UK. Coronary Heart Disease alone affects around 2.3 million people in the UK, with over 60% of them being male and killing twice as many women as breast cancer. Therefore, Curtins Care have pledged their support to help further their research through fundraising and enable lifesaving treatments to be administered to those in need. We are also helping to promote healthy hearts within the workplace by providing knowledge and practical support through collaboration with the BHF and industry experts, arranging events such as CPR training and healthy heart workshops.
Our historic and ongoing support towards local and national charities is not only enriching the lives of the communities in which we work but also the lives of our staff, challenging them to help those in need. This was Bill’s ethos, central to our family culture, and just the way we do things here at Curtins.
