Redevelopment of the existing Salvation Army hall in Baddow Road, Chelmsford. This provided a new, expanded worship hall and support facilities to a modern standard. The building was constructed entirely of timber and cloaked in an undulating zinc roof providing new accommodation for the mission. The project incorporated pioneering modern methods of construction to maximise the potential of sustainable materials. The building was constructed using a cross-laminated timber panel system, which is akin to jumbo plywood and offers all the advantages of reinforced concrete construction without the environmental cost. Additional challenges were the acoustic treatment to screen the main hall from adjacent major highway noise breakthrough. The project won a RIBA award and made it on to the mid-list for the Stirling Prize Building of the Year.
