Festival Gardens bid update

Festival Gardens bid update

We are very excited to see that the ION development team we are a part of has been successful in the bid for the £700m Festival Gardens regeneration project in Liverpool!

The council has been searching for a developer or investor for the 90-acre site for a number of years, and exploring different procurement routes. The latest launched in March; Ion and Midia both submitted expressions of interest, and due to similarities in their proposals suggested to the council they work together on the scheme.

Curtins were part of the 1980s Festival Gardens project and so it is very exciting to be part of one of the biggest and most ambitious regeneration projects on Merseyside and in the Northwest.

The focus for the end of this year, and start of next, will be on developing a combined masterplan between the development teams then coordinating with a remediation strategy for the former landfill site.

Curtins’ Nottingham Office complete Survival of the Fittest

We would like to give a massive Curtins shout out to our team in Nottingham, who completed the Rat Race Survival of the Fittest obstacle course at the weekend at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham.

The team did a fantastic job as the weather was not on their side – 8 degrees Celsius outside and heavy rainfall – managing to raise over £1,500 for the British Heart Foundation!

If you would like to support the team, donations are very much appreciated and can still be made via the team’s My Donate page, here. Thank you!

Curtins is taking steps towards changing the STEM skills gap

Curtins is taking steps towards changing the STEM skills gap

Curtins is taking steps towards changing the STEM skills gap. Our dedicated STEM Ambassadors develop relationships with local schools to champion careers in STEM and increase awareness of opportunities available for a career in engineering.

Our Leeds office has been working closely with the Ruth Gorse Academy (TRGA) in Leeds to provide information, advice and guidance to their pupils through a number of initiatives over the last year, including careers fairs, assembly talks and presentations about Women in Engineering.

We have also been involved in their ‘Career of the Week’ initiative where they provide real life profiles to their pupils to help them discover what is involved in specific careers, and what the academic routes to entry are. Last week Leeds’ Niamh McCloskey provided students with more information about what a career in Structural Engineer involves. Find out more in TRGA’s newsletter here.

Work begins on £8m Stawberry Field development

Work on the £8 project to transform Strawberry Field in Woolton, Liverpool, into a visitor centre, training centre and community café is now officially underway.

The new two-storey development was designed by Hoskins Architects and will provide learning space to up to 40 young adults, as well as an exhibition area in which the site’s original gates will be displayed. The gates are recognised as “an important cultural asset” by the council due to their association with famous The Beatles song about the former children’s home. The development features a gift shop and museum, and the woodland area around the site will be retained.

The project is expected to take around two years to complete and will be operated by The Salvation Army.

We are extremely proud to be providing Civil & Structural Engineering services on this fantastic project, alongside a professional team including Gleeds and Hoskins, with Robertson as contractors.
