Workplaces - Isle of Man
Located in the heart of Douglas’ city centre, this project involved the transformation of a four-storey office block to deliver upgraded workplace accommodation tailored to the demands of contemporary working life.
As part of the project, the existing glazed curtain walling has been replaced to enhance the building’s aesthetic, thermal efficiency and sustainability, made possible through alterations and strengthening to the existing steel structural frame.
Curtins specified strengthening works to the roof to accommodate solar panels, which have reduced the building’s overall operational carbon impact.
The existing building exhibited excessive sway, which needed to be addressed to ensure structural stability. However, spatial constraints limited the areas where strengthening measures could be implemented.
Curtins designed and specified targeted strengthening works that fit within the restricted available space. This approach effectively reduced building sway while minimising the impact on usable floor area - maximising the office space and maintaining the building’s functionality.
