Project Overview

The Barkham Solar Farm project will involve the installation of approximately 43,000 solar panels and associated equipment, secured with fencing, sensor-controlled lighting, and CCTV.

Once operational, the farm is expected to generate over 29 MW (Megawatts) of electricity, producing approximately 28,563,000 kWh (Kilowatt Hours) per year - enough to supply more than 10,500 homes, according to Ofgem figures.

Curtins collaborated with the client to design a ground investigation that provided crucial data for civil and structural teams. Given the site’s variable ground conditions, a zoning plan was developed to highlight design considerations for each field parcel.

The designs also incorporated a new Greenway through the site while preserving a public right of way.

The project will also include a grid connection via underground cables, public rights of way improvements with a Greenway and pedestrian crossing, and landscape enhancements such as 2.66 hectares of woodland and additional biodiversity efforts.

Additional services include highway design, drainage design, maintenance track development, watercourse culverting, service coordination, and structural and ducting design.

The Challenge

One of the key challenges in this project was managing variable ground conditions across a large and diverse site, which could significantly affect the design and construction of infrastructure.

Our Solution

Curtins conducted a comprehensive ground investigation and developed a zoning plan to guide civil and structural teams. This ensured that each parcel of land received tailored design considerations, improving safety, stability, and efficiency across the site.
