The STEM building at the Institute of Technology Tralee is part of the HEB1 Bundle, a group of six projects across Ireland delivered through a Public-Private Partnership programme.
A major new state‑of‑the‑art STEM facility that will significantly expand the campus’s capacity to serve students.
Higher Education - Ireland
Delivered as part of Ireland’s first multi‑site Higher Education PPP—the Higher Education Bundle 1 (HEB1) programme—the scheme marks a significant milestone in contemporary campus development, setting a new benchmark for how academic environments can evolve and expand.
The project under HEB1 Athlone sits at a strategically positioned site within Bunnavally, Athlone, Co. Westmeath, anchoring it firmly within the Leinster region. Its location places it at the centre of a vibrant academic ecosystem, surrounded by some of the university’s most established learning and research facilities. To the east and north, the library and the Software Research Institute create a natural academic boundary, reinforcing strong links to existing knowledge hubs and daily student activity. This positioning not only strengthens the project’s integration with the current campus fabric but also enhances its potential as a catalyst for future growth and collaboration.
The project required the delivery of a state-of-the-art STEM building that could accommodate a wide range of academic and research functions within a compact footprint, while integrating seamlessly with the existing campus infrastructure.
The resulting design comprises a 6,000 m² facility with a ground floor dedicated to lecture theatres, academic offices, a servery, and social learning spaces. The first and second floors house advanced laboratories, while the roof level incorporates mechanical plant screened by steelwork and photovoltaic panels, ensuring both functionality and sustainability.
