How to Reduce Embodied Carbon in Construction was the topic of focus on 22nd May, as Andy Roberts, George Plant and Karl Fitzpatrick from our Dublin office led a CPD webinar to invited clients. The session set out to share learnings on how to deliver lower embodied carbon projects through lean design, structural optimisation, MMC and retrofits, with case studies throughout.

Andy Roberts, Business Unit Director responsible for our Dublin, Kendal and Isle of Man offices, set the scene on Embodied Carbon by explaining the construction industry’s contributions to global carbon emissions and demonstrating the tools Curtins have developed to measure project carbon impact.

With a picture of our current carbon impact established, Karl Fitzpatrick, Associate Structural Engineer, introduced methods for reduction through ‘smart engineering’, which included structural and material optimisation. Through consideration of these approaches, Karl highlighted how embodied carbon can be minimised whilst maintaining cost levels. By using less, we can save both money and carbon.

George Plant, Design Director who has recently relocated from Curtins’ London office to Dublin, presented on Lean Design and MMC. Introduced through comparisons with the Egyptian Pyramids and the Pantheon Theatre’s roof, George explored hybrid construction techniques and built-to-last structures.

Finally, Andy Roberts wrapped up the session by highlighting the most effective method for embodied carbon reduction: re-use of existing buildings.

An excerpt of the video is included below. We'd be delighted to arrange a 121 CPD session for your team. If this is of interest, please get in touch with our team at dublin@curtins.com.

How reusing buildings is fundamental to Midlands regeneration

Across the Midlands and wider built environment, the industry is increasingly moving to a ‘reuse first’ approach. This is a welcome shift given the wealth of existing building stock in the region and the enormity of opportunity for embodied carbon and cost reduction.
