Delivery of new sports pitches for Castle Rushen High School, along with pipework for ground source arrays to feed an energy-efficient heating system.
Schools & Further Education - Isle of Man
As part of the wider development of the high school, this phase project comprised new playing fields, with four football pitches and cricket practice nets, located on agricultural land next to the Castletown school.
The project required significant cut and fill to create two flat plateaus for the pitches, as well as civil engineering to accommodate significant lengths of pipework beneath for ground source arrays. These will become part of the energy-efficient heating system for the proposed new high school in the future.
In order to facilitate the wider development and construction traffic, the phase has also involved creation of a temporary access road.
Curtins acted as lead consultant, with responsibility for managing and coordinating other disciplines for the duration of the project.
The existing site sloped to gradient of 1 in 8, which is not compatible with the requirements of the cricket and football pitches.
Curtins optimised the levels for the sports pitch relative the existing topography. For maximised efficiency and to reduce costs, we specified that existing and excavated material would be reused. Our engineers developed a compaction and site testing specification of the as-dug materials on site, which accounted for varying weather conditions. This was followed up with monitoring to ensure the compaction targets were met, resulting in cost savings and a reduction in carbon emissions from transported materials.
