Industrial & Logistics - The North, England
The Laboratory for Validation & Verification is a national centre of excellence for structural dynamics research and acoustics and vibration testing for the University of Sheffield.
The building comprises a single-storey industrial workshop with office and amenity spaces. The workshop contains a 10T overhead crane, three environmental chambers, a wind machine, a wave machine and a shaker table, which is located within a 9.6x8.0x5.1m deep reinforced concrete pit.
The reinforced concrete pit contains a seismic mass and a shaker table with a 300mm thick cover slab above to allow for trafficking with a fully laden forklift.

Accommodating a heavy seismic mass and shaker table within a reinforced concrete pit while still allowing forklift traffic above.
We provided a robust 300 mm thick concrete cover slab designed to carry forklift loads safely while protecting the equipment housed in the pit below.
RIBA Stage 3 in accelerated timeframes
Extensive craneage (10T cranes)
Designed and RC detailed the raft strips to the perimeter of the structure in advance of casting the whole raft to accelerate the programme and allow for the superstructure to be constructed prior to the remaining section of slab being cast. This also allowed the highly finished slab to be cast once the building was fully clad and protected from the elements.
