The design and construction of a new 2FE primary school, together with associated games and play provision. The school building is a two-storey ‘L’ shaped structure providing classrooms, staff facilities, specialist teaching facilities and a double height assembly hall.

The original project was a proposal to site an extension building for the school on the existing hard landscaping play area. The design team worked together with Interserve as the contractor to propose a new stand-alone building on the existing playing field of the school. This allowed for very minimal disturbance to the school during construction as a separate construction entrance was dedicated, which would not have been possible for the extension. This solution also added value as the overall project achieved a larger facility for the same overall cost.

    Key points:

    • Existing school site.
    • Complex ground conditions with sloping levels and shallow coal seam.
