This development involved the demolition of an existing Victorian Infants School and St.Thomas of Canterbury Primary School, with their replacement being a combined new-build structure. A visual grade cross-laminated timber structure (CLT) was chosen for its sustainability benefits, time/cost efficiency and positive impact on the internal environment of the school.
A two-storey design solution was developed in response to the existing site constraints and the necessity to phase the works to maintain operational capacity of the existing schools.
A cantilevered CLT balcony accentuates the horizontal circulation throughout the school, negating the need for structural supports interrupting the internal street below.
