Mill Cottage at Monkwearmouth Hospital, Sunderland has been redeveloped into a purpose built ward which will provide treatment and assessment facilities for older people with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and psychosis.

The existing unit has been redeveloped and extended to provide 18 individual en-suite rooms. There are two wings of bedrooms, lounges, activity rooms and staff facilities. The new ward is set around a central landscaped courtyard featuring softer ground, raised flower beds so patients can tend to the plants as part of their rehabilitation.

The existing building is of traditional truss roof construction, which limits the height of the ceilings within. The ceilings are 2,450mm high throughout the existing building, except in the central communal area.
