The existing Derby Council offices were extended and modernised  to provide centralised services and deliver new ways of working. The existing three storey concrete encased steel frame was evaluated for re-use and modified to introduce new cores.

The works included the refurbishment and remodelling of the 1930s structure, and the construction of a new build infill to the courtyard area of the existing building. The scheme provides new office space for occupants, meeting spaces, and Mayoral offices, as well as the new civic chamber.

It has boosted local businesses, more than doubling staff numbers from 500 to 1,300.

By linking the building to the nearby hydroelectric power station, a third of the Civic Office’s energy requirements (lighting only) will come from a renewable energy source.
