Merseyside Development Update
Our “new” Liverpool office
It is hard to believe that we have now been in our new Tithebarn Street HQ for 3 years and it’s been great for our team to be able to return the office following Covid restrictions whilst embracing hybrid working options.
We are very proud to have been in Liverpool for 61 years, since Bill Curtin set the company up in 1960, and would have very much enjoyed celebrating this milestone in 2020 had it not been for the restrictions. We are, however, close to full occupancy in all of our 14 offices now and are in the process of planning our birthday celebrations, albeit over 12 months late – watch this space!
During the Covid period, we have re-structured our Liverpool office, Andy Macfarlane is now the Director responsible for Liverpool, having taken over from Tim Bingham in February; and Tim has become a full-time consultant focusing on client relationships and projects opportunities. Andy is working closely with John Kelly who was recently promoted to Technical Director, leading a delivery team of over 30 engineers and technicians.
We continue to work on a wide range of projects in the city region, delivering across all sectors with values ranging from survey & repair commissions to technical master-planning and bespoke projects.
The following are a small selection of these projects and our client:
- Merseyside Police Headquarters: Merseyside Police Authority / Willmott Dixon
- Birkenhead Town Centre: Muse Developments / Wirral Growth Company
- India Buildings Refurbishment: Legal & General / HMRC
- Municipal Buildings Refurbishment: Fragrance / Russel Construction
- DfE Schools: Wates
- Wirral Waters: Peel L&D
- Liverpool Waters: Peel L&D
- Festival Gardens: Liverpool City Council / ION Developments
- Chester Northgate: Cheshire West & Chester Council / Vinci
- Bramley Moore Dock, Everton Football Club / The People’s Project: Laing O’Rourke / Everton Football Club
- Knowledge Quarter: Liverpool City Council / Morgan Sindall
- Edge Lane Housing Development: Torus / Liverpool Mutual Homes
Levelling Up Agenda
We are pleased to be working with a number of Liverpool city region local authorities in their applications for Towns Deal and Levelling Up Agenda funding, and in the delivery of several exciting projects – these are all at an early stage, but watch this space for further news as they progress over the coming months.
We are proud to be Thought Leaders in a range of areas including MMC, Net Zaro Carbon, Digital Delivery and waterfront development. We have presented on these topics in our own Podium webinar events, and also at conferences including Education Estates and AUDE (Association of University Director of Estates).

In other news…
In July this year and after 61 years of independence, we made the monumental transition to become an Employee-Owned Trust, giving our people an increased ability to influence business decision making and share in the company’s financial successes.
Through the new structure, everyone employed by Curtins will have a share in the company’s financial performance and enjoy the benefits from their efforts. Our staff will be able to influence business decisions through our employee forum comprising of 28 representatives from across all of our offices.
The transition to an Employee-Owned Trust was officially signed and declared on 14th July 2021, paving the way for an exciting and more collaborative future for our business and our employees.
Global Diversity Awareness Month
Throughout October, we have been marking Global Diversity Awareness Month with a spotlight on equality, diversity and inclusion. Through staff webinars, surveys, advice and resources, we’ve been learning more and more about the ways we can support each other to create a welcoming and inclusive workplace that is reflective of the communities we serve. We have enjoyed the open discussions these have generated, as well as the introduction of new initiatives, including pronouns in our email signatures, enrolment in the government’s Kickstart Scheme, further benefits for working parents and the launch of diversity networks.
Winners at the Healthcare Estates IHEEM Awards
In October, we were delighted to be named Consultancy of the Year at IHEEM 2021 in recognition of our recent achievements in the sector. The awards celebrate excellence through the latest innovations in the healthcare sector and are judged by experts with extensive experience and achievements within the NHS and commercial healthcare sector. We’re thrilled to have been awarded this prestigious accolade.
