Earlier this month, Rhiannon Carss, Culture & Engagement Director at Curtins, spoke with Insider Media about the power of cultivating a workplace culture rooted in flexibility and trust. She shared how this approach not only fosters a more positive and engaged workforce but also drives long-term, meaningful success.

Curtins has always placed people at the heart of its business. Since 1960, when Bill Curtin founded the company, we've remained proud of our evolving culture and the strong bond we've built with our employees.

The Culture Club article underscores flexibility, empowerment, inclusivity, and benchmarking as key foundations of an exceptional workplace environment. These principles continue to shape how we work and grow together.

In recent years, we’ve led several impactful people-focused initiatives. One standout is the Breaking Down Barriers commission, an initiative focused on removing obstacles that prevent individuals from reaching their full potential, no matter their background or life circumstances.

“When people feel trusted to make decisions, it creates a more agile and responsive workforce. That’s crucial for delivering a top-tier service.” Rhiannon Carss, Culture & Engagement Director

Every year, we run an anonymous staff survey to get honest, real-time insight into how our people are feeling. Here’s what some of them had to say:

  • “There is a really good team and a culture of helping one another as and when required, largely irrespective of experience and seniority.”

  • “Positive, friendly, relaxed yet driven for success and achievements.”

In our latest 2024/2025 survey, 95% of staff said they are happy at work, a reflection of the environment we strive to nurture every day.

How can Cumbria address the skills shortage?

Peter Thomas, Business Unit Director for Kendal, reflects on being told he’d need to leave Cumbria to build a career, a path many still follow as they pursue opportunities in larger cities. However, this has reinforced an outdated perception that rural careers are a compromise, rather than a viable and appealing choice from the outset.

How reusing buildings is fundamental to Midlands regeneration

Across the Midlands and wider built environment, the industry is increasingly moving to a ‘reuse first’ approach. This is a welcome shift given the wealth of existing building stock in the region and the enormity of opportunity for embodied carbon and cost reduction.
