Gladstone’s Land, Edinburgh

Restoration and retrofitting to one of the oldest buildings on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

Arts & Culture - Scotland

Project Overview

The National Trust for Scotland refurbished Gladstones Land building, creating a new ‘ice cream and coffee parlour’ on the ground floor, which weaves 17th century details in to the design.

The self-catering apartments have also been upgraded – with nods to the unique property’s historical past.

The Challenge

Almost 90 years after saving the building from demolition, The National Trust wished to reopen the doors to this historic building, which was one of the oldest buildings on the Royal Mile, requiring sensitive design approaches and engineering assessment to understand the limits of the existing structure.

Our Solution

Our scope included an initial inspection of the property to confirm if the alterations works could be undertaken. We undertook an assessment of the existing floor structure to assess if the new stone floor covering could be introduced within the entrance area of the new parlour. The underside of the floor needed to be strengthened to cater for the additional load and this was completed by introducing a new timber flitch beam spanning between a new stud wall and existing masonry wall. Strone repairs were carried out at various locations including stitching lintols at crack locations. A new entrance screen was installed along the line of the existing screen.
