Project Overview
The Newport Transporter bridge is one of the world’s most complete and working transporter bridges, and an important part of Wales’ industrial heritage. As part of the project, the Grade I listed bridge is being preserved and a new visitor centre will enhance the overall visitor experience.
The bridge is comprised of 1,400 tonnes of early 20th Century steel and soars 242ft above an industrial landscape.
We were appointed to develop the conservation of the bridge in a holistic manner, optimising the scheme and prioritising repair and replacement of critical elements where essential to the structural performance.
The Challenge
As a Grade 1 listed structure, historic record drawings were held but there were no accessible records for maintenance and upkeep.
Our Solution
We created a complete digital model of the bridge and developed an intervention matrix to establish the condition and priority of all bridge elements. This allowed more critical elements to be addressed in a suitable and cost-effective manner.

Project Highlights
Design and appraisal of specific bespoke repair details to enable LBC application and approval.
Close liaison with design team to develop Stage 2 HLF application and tender information.
Testimonial
“Curtins continue to deliver a quality service, working collaboratively to support a complex project. Our requirements are bespoke and often stipulate short lead times, which Curtins reliably manages to achieve. Sam McCourt and Stephen Beggs exude passion and enthusiasm, seeing value for the client in all their work that I do not find equal from many other firms.”
