At Curtins, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to our identity and success as an employee-owned trust. Our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment is reflected in our initiatives that empower every colleague to thrive, ensuring that diverse voices are not only heard but valued.

Reverse Mentoring: Bridging Generational Gaps

One of our standout initiatives is the reverse mentoring programme. This innovative approach pairs junior staff with senior leaders, allowing younger professionals to share fresh perspectives and insights. By facilitating open dialogue, we ensure that important issues are brought to the forefront, helping to future-proof our business. This initiative has not only empowered our younger employees but has also enriched our leadership with a broader range of viewpoints, leading to more informed decision-making at all levels.

Leading Gender Support: Addressing Unique Challenges

Curtins is also at the forefront of gender support within the construction industry. Our spotlight on menstruation directly addresses the challenges women face on construction sites, such as inadequate facilities and a lack of awareness among colleagues. By providing sanitary products in our offices and pool cars, and conducting training sessions for staff, we are breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive environment. The positive feedback from our employees highlights the importance of these initiatives in making everyone feel seen and supported.

Employee Networks

As part of our Success for All commitment, we are pioneering a Workforce Assembly model. This initiative encourages all colleagues to voice their perspectives and influence decisions shaping the company. By creating a safe space for discussion, we can identify barriers to inclusion and collaboratively develop practical solutions. This model not only strengthens our organisational culture but also ensures that every employee has a role in shaping our future.

Dignity at Work: Creating a Respectful Environment

We recognise that a respectful workplace is essential for everyone to feel valued. Our dignity at work programme emphasises inclusive behaviours and equips managers with the skills to foster a supportive atmosphere. The training prepares our workforce for upcoming legislative changes and ensures that inappropriate conduct is swiftly addressed. By embedding these principles across the organisation, we are committed to creating a culture where everyone can contribute to our collective success.

A Commitment to Continuous Improvement

At Curtins, our dedication to diversity and inclusion is ongoing. We are proud of the progress we have made, but we recognise that there is always more to be done. By actively engaging with our employees and fostering an environment where everyone can thrive, we are not just enhancing our workplace; we are setting a standard for the industry. Together, we can break down barriers and create a more equitable future for all.

By sharing our journey and initiatives, we hope to inspire other organisations to embrace diversity and inclusion as core values. At Curtins, we are committed to making a positive impact not only within our company but also in the communities we serve.

For more information on any of these initiatives, please read our Impact Report, or get in touch if you'd like to talk.

How can Cumbria address the skills shortage?

Peter Thomas, Business Unit Director for Kendal, reflects on being told he’d need to leave Cumbria to build a career, a path many still follow as they pursue opportunities in larger cities. However, this has reinforced an outdated perception that rural careers are a compromise, rather than a viable and appealing choice from the outset.

How reusing buildings is fundamental to Midlands regeneration

Across the Midlands and wider built environment, the industry is increasingly moving to a ‘reuse first’ approach. This is a welcome shift given the wealth of existing building stock in the region and the enormity of opportunity for embodied carbon and cost reduction.
