A new acute hospital designed for efficiency and sustainability, utilising modular construction and off-site manufacturing as part of a Net Zero Carbon strategy.
Healthcare - The South, England
A 90,000m2 new build acute hospital is being delivered as part of the NHP Phase 1 series of projects.
The scheme is situated on a greenfield site with the design taking maximum advantage of the natural surroundings in its form and function. Designed with MMC in mind the structural and MEP solutions have been developed to increase opportunities for pre-fabrication and off-site-manufacture, whilst optimising future flexibility with delivery efficiency.
The structural solution comprises of precast hollowcore slabs spanning onto Delta beams which in turn span onto precast concrete columns and precast concrete twin walls. The superstructure construction omits the need for temporary back propping of slabs which reduces the construction programme and saves on materials. An insitu concrete topping is applied to facilitate level access to bathroom pods and control vibration. The insitu concrete topping maximises the use of cement replacement materials to reduce the embodied carbon content of the structure.
A detailed cut and fill analysis was undertaken to determine the founding level of the Lower Ground Floor to make best use of the sloping site.
The Net Zero Carbon agenda is at the core of the MEP design, with a modular all-electric energy chassis concept proposed as part of the NZC strategy. The scheme is also embracing Digital and Intelligent Building technologies to support improved clinical and building operation as well as an enhanced user experience.
Delivering a large-scale 90,000m² acute hospital on a greenfield site while optimising efficiency, sustainability, and future flexibility. The project required innovative solutions to enhance construction speed, reduce material waste, and support Net Zero Carbon goals.
The hospital uses modular construction and pre-fabricated elements to speed up delivery, reduce material waste, and enhance flexibility. A smart energy system supports Net Zero Carbon goals, while digital technologies improve clinical operations and the overall user experience.
