L&D Team

Curiosity is central to the team’s approach. By encouraging people to ask questions, explore new ideas and reflect on how they work, L&D supports a culture of learning and improvement across Curtins.

The team plays an important role in early‑career development, supporting STEM engagement, work experience opportunities, placements and student programmes, including the Civils Summer Programme delivered in partnership with Symetri. The L&D team also coordinates and supports apprenticeship pathways, developing both professional skills and personal capability across Level 3 to Level 7 qualifications.

Alongside this, the team runs initiatives that encourage collaboration and shared learning, such as the Reverse Mentoring programme. Technical development pathways are also supported, including routes towards chartership for both technical and non‑technical roles. Through this work, the L&D team helps people develop their careers and reach their potential at Curtins.

“I thrive on seeing people grow in confidence - empowering them to do their best work and take the next step in their careers”

Pathways to becoming part of Learning and Development

Route 1: Apprenticeship Pathway

An increasingly popular and accessible route, suitable for both new entrants and career-changers.

  • Join an organisation as an L&D apprentice, coordinator, or support role

  • Complete a recognised qualification (i.e., Level 3 CIPD Foundation Certificate in People Practice)

  • Gain hands-on experience alongside formal learning

  • Progress into advisor, specialist or manager roles

Route 2: Early-Career / Education Pathway

This pathway is common for those who know early on they want to work in learning, people development, or HR.

  • Complete a degree or qualification in areas such as HR, Education, Psychology, Business, or Learning & Development

  • Start a graduate role, internship, or entry-level L&D or HR role

  • Progress into L&D specialist, advisor, or learning partner roles

Route 3: Other Paths into Learning and Development

Many L&D professionals move into the field after gaining experience in another discipline (e.g. engineering, finance, HR, operations, IT).

  •  Build strong subject-matter expertise in a professional or technical role

  • Support learning informally (mentoring, training others, presenting, coaching)

  • Move into an L&D, training, or capability role using transferable skills

  • Strengthen credibility with L&D qualifications or apprenticeships
