Project Overview
Four studios have been provided within the open space of the existing building, alongside new corridors and a construction space. The expansion at Hawkfield Business Park has increased the number of stages on offer from 8 to 11 and is intended to maintain and grow film and TV production in Bristol and South West.
In addition to structural assessments and detailing, civil engineering input was provided to allow for the relocation of the toilet and shower facilities.
By retrofitting the existing structures, new life was given to the 40 year old industrial building, and the avoidance of demolition and re-construction saved embodied carbon and money. Overall the project has also contributed to the regeneration of the Hawkfield Business Park area .
The Challenge
The existing structure needed to meet the specialist requirements of the studio equipment and filming.
Our Solution
We assessed the spare capacity of the existing steel super structure and foundations, allowing the client to hang a new filming equipment rig to the existing steel trusses forming the roof. We also assessed the capacity of the existing ground bearing slab, as new 12m high double studs partitions were required to acoustically isolate the four proposed filming studios.
