At Curtins, our Business Development, Bid and Marketing teams play a leading role in how we engage clients, support work-winning and communicate with our colleagues. We help clients understand how Curtins’ services can deliver on their ambitions in the built environment, while ensuring our people feel informed, connected and proud of the work we do.

Pathways to joining our marketing, business development and bid teams

Careers in these fields are flexible, people-focused and open to a wide range of skills and experiences. Below are some of the most common routes into Business Development, Bid and Marketing roles at Curtins.

Route 1: Work-based learning and professional qualifications

This route suits people who enjoy learning by doing and want to build practical experience early.

  • Start in an entry-level role such as Marketing Assistant, Bid Assistant, Business Development Assistant, Digital Marketing Apprentice or Communications Assistant.

  • Study towards a professional qualification, such as CIM Level 3, alongside your role to build a strong grounding in marketing, business development and work-winning principles.

  • Develop confidence in areas such as:

    • Client and market research

    • Bid coordination and proposal development

    • Content creation and storytelling

    • Campaign planning and delivery

    • Stakeholder engagement and collaboration

    • Analytics, insight and reporting

  • Progress into more specialised or senior roles such as Marketing Coordinator, Bid Coordinator, Business Development Executive, Content Creator or Graphic Designer.

  • Many people continue with CIM Level 4 or Level 6 to support progression into roles such as Marketing Executive, Bid Manager, Business Development Manager or Marketing Manager.

Route 2: Degree and academic pathways

Ideal for people who enjoy structured learning and want a broad foundation before specialising.

  • Study a degree through university or distance learning in subjects such as Marketing, Business Studies, Communications, Media, Journalism, Graphic Design, Digital Media or related disciplines.

  • Move into an early-career role such as Marketing Assistant, Marketing Executive, Bid Assistant, Communications Officer or Business Development Executive.

  • Professional qualifications such as CIM can be completed alongside your role to deepen strategic understanding and support career progression.

This route suits:

  • People who enjoy research, theory and academic study

  • Those who want to explore commercial, creative and communication skills before choosing a specialism

  • Individuals with strengths in writing, analysis, strategy or creative thinking

Route 3: Other Paths into Business Development, Bid and Marketing

We value lived experience, curiosity and transferable skills. Many people who thrive in these teams come from non-traditional backgrounds or different careers.

Examples of Non‑Traditional Routes

  • Career changers from administration, sales, events management, client services or HR, where commercial awareness and communication skills are key.

  • Self-taught creatives such as designers, photographers, videographers or content creators.

  • People with experience in community engagement, accessibility, inclusion or working with underrepresented groups.

  • Those who have developed skills through volunteering or side projects, such as managing social media, writing blogs, coordinating events or supporting community initiatives.

  • Digital creators or influencers who understand audience-building, brand voice and performance insight.
