Project Overview

Named in honour of legendary mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, these two striking buildings stand markers in Birkenhead’s emerging business and commercial regeneration. Their design blends sleek modernity with environmental efficiency and a strong sense of social purpose.

Together, the Grade A office buildings span approximately 150,000ft2, forming the first phase of a transformative town centre regeneration. This initiative is steered by Wirral Growth Company - a joint venture between Wirral Council and Muse Developments - under the Birkenhead 2040 framework.

Construction of the £75 million scheme, forward funded by Canada Life Asset Management, began in early 2022. The project unfolded over 22 months, culminating in a successful handover in October 2023 - on time and on budget.

The Mallory building is the new home of Wirral Council, occupying around 65,000ft2. Meanwhile, the Irvine building is geared toward private tenants and is available for lease, ready to welcome new businesses into the heart of Birkenhead.

Curtins played a pivotal role as civil, structural, and geo-environmental engineers, appointed by the Wirral Growth Company for this award-winning development and working collaboratively with AHR & Morgan Sindall to deliver successful completion.

The Challenge

The challenge lay in creating high-quality, flexible open-plan workspaces within constrained floor-to-floor heights, demanding a carefully engineered solution that balanced structural performance with architectural ambition.

Our Solution

Curtins worked collaboratively with AHR and Morgan Sindall to the meet the client’s brief of designing open-plan office floor areas by utilising long-span floor beams to provide an internal column-free structure, whilst maintaining a minimum 2.8m floor-to-floor ceiling height
