Project Overview
In 2022, Curtins was commissioned to undertake an emergency inspection of the school's Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) roof following safety concerns. The findings resulted in the immediate closure of part of the dining and kitchen facilities.
To support the client in maintaining a safe and operational school environment, Curtins subsequently carried out detailed investigations and ongoing assessments of the RAAC roof, helping to manage risks while longer-term solutions were explored.
By April 2023, due to continued deterioration, water ingress issues, and updated industry guidance on RAAC, the decision was made to close the entire affected section of the school. Curtins undertook a feasibility study to evaluate roof replacement options, including demolition and construction phasing and considering pupil decant strategies to minimise disruption to the live school environment. In parallel with demolition support, the team supported the development of proposals for a new-build extension to replace the existing RAAC-affected buildings.
The new extension provides a modern, high-quality learning environment, including a reception area, canteen and dining facilities, four-court sports hall, dance studio, fitness suite, changing village, performance space, café, nurture rooms, and a variety of flexible learning areas.
Linked directly to the existing teaching block, the development enables the removal of all temporary accommodation on site and creates a cohesive campus for one of West Lothian's largest schools.
The project was delivered on behalf of the council in collaboration with Hub South East, Heron Bros as main contractor, and BDP as architect.
Curtins' geo-environmental team also carried out a comprehensive ground investigation to inform the proposed extension. This included an assessment of the site's historical mining legacy, contaminated land risk evaluations, and detailed ground condition analysis to support the selection of appropriate foundation solutions.

The Challenge
The deterioration of the RAAC roof, combined with updated structural guidance and ongoing water ingress, created significant safety concerns while the school remained operational. The project also had to address complex ground conditions and historical mining risks.
Our Solution
Curtins provided structural and geo-environmental expertise to support informed decision-making, from assessing the existing RAAC buildings to developing replacement options and decant strategies. Detailed ground investigations helped inform the design of the new extension, delivering a safe, modern, and long-term solution for the school.
