Hybrid working isn’t just a buzzword at Curtins - it’s a catalyst for change, and we see hybrid working as a vital thread weaving together wellbeing, inclusivity and sustainability.

We view flexibility not as a perk, but a strategic lever for social impact.

As a long-standing Purpose Coalition partner, we were invited to join a recent Purpose Lab discussion, where Rhiannon Carss, Director of Culture and Engagement, shed light on how hybrid practices contribute to happiness, reduce carbon emissions and open up opportunity - not just for staff, but for the wider community.

“Boosting happiness, encouraging inclusivity and cutting carbon emissions are just some of the wins we’re seeing through hybrid working.”

More Than a Workstyle - It’s a Lifestyle

Our hybrid model combines home and office spaces, empowering individuals to shape their working environments. For working parents, caregivers and those balancing personal responsibilities, this adaptability fosters a healthier work-life balance and broader participation.

The pandemic served as a pivotal moment. It wasn’t just a temporary shift -it redefined what was possible. We embraced the challenge, navigating the learning curve with empathy and openness. While hybrid working isn’t flawless, it’s a journey they’re committed to refining.

Tackling Challenges Through Connection

During the session, Purpose Lab Ambassadors raised crucial questions: Can new staff feel truly connected remotely? Are informal mentorship and spontaneous collaboration at risk? Which we were more than happy to answer.

From regular virtual check-ins to thoughtfully designed workspaces featuring collaborative zones and quiet areas for neurodivergent colleagues, we foster a culture of connection and care. Hybrid working is continuously shaped by feedback, with evolving practices that reflect what staff genuinely need.

Sustainability and Community at the Core

Our values shine through in our commitment to social responsibility. Hybrid schedules reduce commuting emissions and free up time for volunteering and community involvement. It’s a model that nurtures the planet and people alike.

Purpose Lab in Action

The impact of our engagement doesn’t stop at policy - it opens doors. Following an inspiring Purpose Lab session, Teesside University student Gursimran Kaur joined the Curtins Virtual Insight Summer Programme, bridging the gap between emerging talent and industry leaders. That’s tangible proof of purpose in motion.

We believe hybrid working isn’t just redefining where we work - it’s reshaping how we build an inclusive, connected and values-led future.

How can Cumbria address the skills shortage?

Peter Thomas, Business Unit Director for Kendal, reflects on being told he’d need to leave Cumbria to build a career, a path many still follow as they pursue opportunities in larger cities. However, this has reinforced an outdated perception that rural careers are a compromise, rather than a viable and appealing choice from the outset.

How reusing buildings is fundamental to Midlands regeneration

Across the Midlands and wider built environment, the industry is increasingly moving to a ‘reuse first’ approach. This is a welcome shift given the wealth of existing building stock in the region and the enormity of opportunity for embodied carbon and cost reduction.
